BMW has brought back the 8 Series coupe. The 8 series launch model is the all-wheel-drive M850i xDrive. The new M850i xDrive features a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 523bhp with 554lb ft of torque available between 1800rpm and 4600rpm. 0-62mph in 3.7sec, with a limited top speed of 155mph. The other launch model the 840d xDrive, is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel producing 316bhp and 501lb ft, with a 0-62mph time of 4.9sec. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive has an improved eight speed transmission. The transmission is GPS aided for predicting gear changes, drop gears leading into a tight set of corners, or hang onto a gear on short straights.
20inch alloy wheels, Bridgestone tyres 245/35 R20 at the front, 275/30 R20 at the rear, The 840d sits on 18in wheels as standard, with 19inch and 20inch available as options, you’ll find a double wishbone suspension setup up front, and a five link setup out back. xDrive are adaptive suspension and active rear steering, to help pilot the car through tight turns and maintain stability at high speeds, along with brakes measuring 395mm up front in the M850i and 374mm at the front of the 840d.
The 8 Series is 4843mm long with a wheelbase of 2822mm, 1902mm wide and 1341mm tall. The boot has a capacity of 420 litres. to keep the weight down, the roof, doors, hood, front subframe assembly, and firewall of the 2019 8 Series are all made of aluminum. Bracing for the cabin is made from magnesium, and the driveshaft tunnel is carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The roof can also be optioned in carbon.
Interior view of the new 8 series has 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch freestanding iDrive display atop the centre console. Both central and driver displays are now running BMW OS7.0. It has new sport seats upholstered in Merino leather. The color of the ambient lighting can be customized in the iDrive menu. A 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is standard. Also on offer is a 1,375-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond sound system.
